THE UGLY DUCKLING. 

미운 오리 새끼

A duck made her nest under some leaves.

한 오리가 나뭇잎 아래에 둥지를 지었어요.

She sat on the eggs to keep them warm.

그녀는 알을 따뜻하게 품기 위해 알 위에 앉았지요.

At last the eggs broke, one after the other. Little ducks came out.

결국 알들이 하나씩 하나씩 깨졌어요. 아기 오리들이 나온 거에요.

Only one egg was left. It was a very large one.

오직 한 알만 남았어요. 그것은 매우 큰 알이었답니다.

"What a big duckling!" said the old duck. 

“이렇게 큰 아기라니!” 늙은 오리가 말했어요.

"He does not look like us. Can he be a turkey?

“얘는 우리 같이 생기지 않았어. 칠면조가 아닐까?

-We will see.

지켜보자구.

If he does not like the water, he is not a duck."

만약 얘가 물을 싫어한다면, 오리가 아닌거야.

The next day the mother duck took her ducklings to the pond.

다음 날, 어미 오리는 새끼오리들을 데리고 연못으로 갔어요.

Splash! Splash! The mother duck was in the water.

첨벙! 첨벙! 엄마 오리가 물 안에 있네요. 

Then she called the ducklings to come in. 

그러더니 그녀는 새끼들을 들어오라고 불렀어요.

They all jumped in and began to swim.

그들은 모두 뛰어들었고 수영하기 시작했지요.

The big, ugly duckling swam, too.

그 크고 못생긴 새끼오리도 역시 수영을 했어요.

The mother duck said, "He is not a turkey. He is my own little duck. He will not be so ugly when he is bigger."

엄마 오리가 말했어요. “얘는 칠면조가 아니야. 얘는 내 새끼 오리야. 좀 더 크면 그렇게 못생기지는 않을거야.”

Then she said to the ducklings, "Come with me. I want you to see the other ducks. Stay by me and look out for the cat."

그리고나서 그녀는 새끼들에게 말했어요. “나와 함께 가자꾸나. 다른 오리들을 보여줄께. 내 옆에 꼭 붙어있고 고양이를 조심하도록 하렴.”

They all went into the duck yard. 

그들은 모두 오리 마당으로 나갔어요.

What a noise the ducks made!

오리들 소리가 어쩜 그렇게 시끄러운지.

While the mother duck was eating a big bug, an old duck bit the ugly duckling.

엄마 오리가 큰 곤충을 먹고 있을 때, 한 늙은 오리가 미운 오리 새끼를 물었어요.

"Let him alone," said the mother duck.

“그를 놔주세요” 엄마 오리가 말했어요.

 "He did not hurt you."

“얘가 당신을 괴롭힌 것도 아니잖아요”

"I know that," said the duck, "but he is so ugly, I bit him."

“나도 알지” 그 오리가 말했어요. “하지만 얘는 너무 못생겨서 내가 물었어”

The next duck they met, said, "You have lovely ducklings. They are all pretty but one. He is very ugly."

그 다음으로 만난 오리가 말했어요. “당신은 참 사랑스러운 새끼들을 낳았군요. 모두가 예쁜데, 한마리만 빼구요. 쟤는 너무 못생겼네요.”

The mother duck said, "I know he is not pretty. But he is very good."

엄마 오리가 말했어요. “저도 쟤가 예쁘지 않다는 건 알아요. 하지만, 그 아인 착하답니다.”

Then she said to the ducklings, "Now, my dears, have a good time."

그러더니 그녀는 새끼들에게 말했어요. “자, 얘들아, 즐거운 시간 보내라”

But the poor, big, ugly duckling did not have a good time.

하지만, 불쌍한 미운오리새끼는 즐거운 시간을 갖지 못했어요.

The hens all bit him. 

닭들이 모두 그를 물었구요.

The big ducks walked on him.

큰 오리들은 그를 밟고 지나갔어요.

The poor duckling was very sad.

불쌍한 새끼오리는 매우 슬펐어요.

He did not want to be so ugly.

그는 그렇게 못생기고 싶지 않았습니다.

But he could not help it.

하지만 어쩔 수 없었지요.

He ran to hide under some bushes.

그는 뛰어가 숲 아래에 숨었어요.

The little birds in the bushes were afraid and flew away.

숲 속에 있던 작은 새들이 겁을 먹고 날아가버렸어요.

"It is all because I am so ugly," said the duckling.

“이게 다 내가 너무 못생겨서 그런거야” 새끼오리가 말했어요.

So he ran away.

그리고 그는 도망쳤답니다.

At night he came to an old house.

밤이되자 그는 낡은 집에 도착했어요.

The house looked as if it would fall down.

그 집은 마치 쓰러질 것처럼 생겼지요.

It was so old.

그건 너무나 낡았어요.

But the wind blew so hard that the duckling went into the house.

하지만 바람이 너무 심하게 불어서 새끼오리는 그 집으로 들어갔어요.

An old woman lived there with her cat and her hen.

그곳에는 한 할머니가 고양이와 암탉과 함께 살고 있었어요.

The old woman said, "I will keep the duck. I will have some eggs."

할머니가 말했어요. “내가 이 오리를 돌봐줘야겠다. 알을 좀 얻을 수 있겠지”

The next day, the cat saw the duckling and began to growl.

다음 날, 고양이가 오리새끼를 보고는 으르렁대기 시작했어요.

The hen said, "Can you lay eggs?" 

암탉이 말했어요. “너는 알을 낳을 수 있니?”

The duckling said, "No."

새끼오리가 말했어요. “아니요”

"Then keep still," said the hen.

“그러면 가만히 있어” 암탉이 말했어요.

The cat said, "Can you growl?"

고양이가 말했어요. “너는 으르렁댈 수 있니?”

"No," said the duckling.

“아니” 새끼오리가 말했어요.

"Then keep still," said the cat.

“그러면 가만히 있어.” 고양이가 말했어요

And the duckling hid in a corner.

그러자 새끼오리는 구석에 숨었어요.

The next day he went for a walk.

다음 날 그는 산책을 나갔어요.

He saw a big pond.

그는 커다란 연못을 보았어요.

He said, "I will have a good swim."

그는 말했어요. “나는 수영을 잘 할 거야.”

But all of the animals made fun of him.

하지만 모든 동물들이 그를 비웃었어요.

He was so ugly.

그는 너무 못생겼거든요.

The summer went by.

그 여름이 지나갔어요.

Then the leaves fell and it was very cold.

그리고나서 나뭇잎이 떨어지고 매우 추워졌지요.

 The poor duckling had a hard time.

불쌍한 새끼오리는 힘겨운 시간을 보냈어요.

It is too sad to tell what he did all winter.

그가 겨울 내내 무엇을 했는지 말하기도 너무 슬프네요.

At last it was spring.

마침내 봄이 왔어요.

The birds sang.

새들이 노래했어요.

The ugly duckling was big now.

미운오리새끼는 이제 많이 컸답니다.

One day he flew far away.

어느날 그는 멀리 날아갔어요.

Soon he saw three white swans on the lake.

곧 그는 호수에서 세 마리의 하얀 백조를 보았답니다.

He said, "I am going to see those birds. I am afraid they will kill me, for I am so ugly."

그는 말했어요. “저 새들을 보러 가야지. 하지만 내가 너무 못생겨서 그들이 나를 죽이지 않을까 무서워.”

He put his head down to the water.

그는 머리를 물 쪽으로 숙였어요.

What did he see?

그가 무엇을 보았을까요?

He saw himself in the water.

그는 물 속에 비친 자신을 보았답니다.

But he was not an ugly duck.

그는 못생긴 오리가 아니었어요.

He was a white swan.

그는 하얀 백조였어요.

The other swans came to see him.

다른 백조들이 그를 보러 다가왔어요.

The children said, "Oh, see the lovely swans. The one that came last is the best."

한 어린이가 말했어요. “와, 사랑스러운 백조를 좀 봐. 제일 마지막에 온 백조가 제일 멋지다.”

And they gave him bread and cake.

그리고 그들은 그에게 빵과 케익을 주었어요.

It was a happy time for the ugly duckling.

미운 오리 새끼에게는 행복한 시간이었답니다.
